Artist’s Statement
I am concerned with the nature of the body, and how it holds within it representations of love, duality, and mythology. My works are questions towards interpersonal relationships, my character, and my relationship with nature.
Metaphor is central to my language: how one thing can become other things, represent something more intimately, or perhaps carry within it multiple identities. In some works, exotic cats hang in my childhood garden. In other works, I visit the characters of Narcissus and Eve. Symmetry has become increasingly important; although rooted in the human body, symmetry extends to images of the natural world which bow together, and bend apart from each other, in addition to animal forms. The imagery comes from personal experiences and also fantasies that relate to the desire I have for the people and animals in my work. I am engaged with the shame, lust, and loss that comes from when these fantasies fall apart due to the fallacies in their construction. There is an apathy in how figures engage with nature, as shown through the breaking tree branches when climbing, displaying a trophy hunt, and acting as a voyeur to a deer dying in close proximity. These interactions explore the tension between admiration and fetish, which I believe to be truthful.
I care for the core of Mythology through content, composition, and light. My work investigates feelings of simultaneous intimacy and separation, which inhabit intrapersonal relationships and our relationship to the natural world.
Bio
Julia Gould is an Artist living and working in Baltimore Maryland. Julia holds a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she majored in Painting, and minored in Printmaking. Julia’s work has been exhibited and awarded by organizations such as the YoungArts Foundation in Miami, the Baltimore Museum of Art, ABR Contemporary in Tribeca, T & Y Projects in Tokyo, and the National Society for Arts and Letters in Washington DC. In addition she has lectured in the Baltimore area along with exhibiting in solo and invitational, juried exhibitions.
