ARTIST STATEMENT
I am concerned with the nature of the body, and how it holds within it representations of love, duality, and mythology.
My paintings, drawings, and prints are in conversation with narrative traditions that I simultaneously admire and doubt. Working between these methods, I am able to investigate how mark and composition create content for narrative.
The role of rendering is fluid, It fluctuates between a gestural celebration of mark and a dense attention to form. I am questioning how the visibility of the artist’s mark reflects on the representational image, and what possible ‘live-ness’ or ‘still-ness’ this can address. Drawing and monotyping encourage a process of quick and repetitive image-making. This allows me to move between slick and coarse surfaces and well as work through iterations of the same image. I work back and forth between these processes in order to utilize the reflective nature of the printmaking matrix. I am interested in symmetry as a relationship, and as a method of creating structure.
The reflective quality of symmetry addresses the relationship between figures, and relationships within a figure. I address the tension between the desires to be one with, and apart from, those we choose to be close to. Phenomenologically, this is rooted in the symmetrical form of the body. I believe the shape of our form is so strong that its symmetry can be completed by another body. Formally, this method of self-framing content is necessary to the architecture of multi-paneled works. The composite structure of these paintings, drawings, and prints comes from the need to start with parts. Through the discovery of the relationships between these parts, I can construct the larger image. This reflection doesn’t stay within the body, it extends to images of the natural world that bow together, and bend apart from each other, and animal forms. Metaphor is an image making tool that I strongly believe in, how one thing can become other things, or perhaps in its nature carries with it multiple identities. This is a question about the ‘part-ness’ or ‘whole-ness’ of my relationships to others, within myself, and to nature.
